How Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy Works

Hormone levels decrease and bring along symptoms that affect your quality of life, happiness, health, and more. While you can try to combat each symptom individually, hormone replacement therapy is a choice that corrects the issues simultaneously, as it boosts your hormone level(s) closer to the normal range.

Overview of Bioidentical Hormones

Overview of Bioidentical Hormones

Traditionally, you had the option of synthetic hormones to elevate estrogen, progesterone, or testosterone. However, as a revolutionary way to treat your hormonal imbalance, bioidentical hormone replacement therapy for both women and men can raise your levels back within normal range. You can then breathe a little easier, as your symptoms begin to lessen and become less prevalent.

The best part about this form of hormone therapy is that these chemical messengers mimic the hormones your body naturally produces almost identically. Rather than stemming from chemicals found in a laboratory, these hormones typically originate from a natural, plant-based source, such as soy or yams.

Extraction Process

Extraction Process

The compounds similar to the ones your body produces are extracted from the plant using a chemical or alcohol extraction process. After, the compounds undergo modification so they then match the structure of human hormones.

Discover if Hormone Therapy Is an Option for Your Symptoms

Discover if Hormone Therapy Is an Option for Your Symptoms

Your bioidentical hormone replacement therapy begins with a full evaluation, where we review your symptoms, health history, and bloodwork. Men are assessed for free and bound testosterone, while women are evaluated for estrogen and progesterone levels.

Once we analyze your results, we’ll determine whether hormone therapy is right for you and explain the benefits backed by science. You’ll then review your treatment options — including pellets, pills, patches, gels, creams, or injectables — and we’ll answer any questions to help you choose the best approach.

04.

Starting Your Treatment

Starting Your Treatment

Once we get the okay from you that you’re ready to start and have chosen a type, you’re all set to begin your treatment. If it’s a variety, we need to administer it in the office. You’ll receive it before you leave and will be told when you must return for follow-up appointments.

Let’s say you’re going to get hormone replacement pellets. Our practitioner will first prepare the pellets, which means customizing the treatment to meet your specific hormonal needs. Then, it’s essential to clean the area where the pellets will be inserted, typically in the buttocks or hip, to prevent infection.

The next step is our practitioner applying a local anesthesia, making an incision, placing the rice-sized pellets, and closing the opening with a few dissolvable stitches.

Experiencing the Results

Experiencing the Results

Once you start the treatment, you’ll start to see the results gradually. You tend to see results quicker with injectables, as they’re given directly in the blood. Generally, the effects from these are seen in as little as one to two weeks. The full impact of the treatment may take three months, with some people not experiencing how much bioidentical hormone replacement therapy will benefit them until six months.

Pills, creams, rings, pellets, and patches take a bit longer for the effects to begin, usually two to four weeks. The full effects usually take three to six months.

Following Up After Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy

Following Up After Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy

Not everyone benefits from hormone replacement therapy in the same way. Sometimes, it takes adjusting the original plan for the client to experience the benefits fully. And we strongly want our clients to feel comfortable and achieve the best possible results.

For that reason, at any subsequent visits after you begin treatment, we’ll monitor your progress by asking you questions and evaluating your hormone levels through a blood test.

Signs & Symptoms You Could Use Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy

While preventative treatment is an option, which is when you visit before you start to have symptoms of perimenopause, menopause, or andropause, many of our clients prefer to wait until symptoms arise to see if they actually develop problems and possibly prevent taking a medication when they don’t need it.

Some symptoms that women should look out for that signify they should look into BHRT include:

  • Hot flashes

Men might notice they feel like doing once again, accomplishing tasks, and having the desire to do so. They might consider the future and strive to achieve their goals once again.

Both men and women may feel less fatigued, making it easier for them to get through the day. Either gender may notice a difference in their mood, as they feel less irritable and more emotionally regulated.

FAQs

Standard hormone replacement therapy treatments typically consist of synthetic or animal-derived hormones. Bioidentical hormones, however, come from plants and are similar to your own hormones.

Generally, we don’t recommend that anyone over 60 receive treatment, as the benefits don’t tend to outweigh the risks at this point. We also usually won’t recommend it if you have a family history of blood clots, heart disease, breast cancer, or stroke.

The drawbacks of bioidentical hormone therapy are that they can cause side effects, just like any other hormone replacement. Some studies show that side effects are more common with BHRT, while others show the opposite.

The amount of time a woman should stay on bioidentical hormones depends on her chances of long-term effects, how well it’s controlling her symptoms, and other similar questions. That said, generally two to five years is in the ideal range.

Though it depends on how well you’re responding to hormones, how long your symptoms are lasting, and other vital factors, most people can expect to be on BHRT for two to five years.
