Thyroid Optimization

in MIAMI, FL

The thyroid is small but mighty, producing hormones that regulate your metabolism and energy levels. When it’s sluggish, you may have unwanted weight gain and just feel overall worn down frequently. Rather than contending with these symptoms daily, there’s treatment to help.

At Hydrology, Dr. A. Zuriarrain and the team help those in Coral Gables, FL, and the surrounding area get their thyroid in check through thyroid optimization, because when this gland isn’t working optimally, you feel it.

How Thyroid Optimization Works

If you’re experiencing symptoms, you may feel they’ll pass, or you can contend with them. However, a thyroid disorder, depending on the cause, often won’t resolve on its own. And managing the symptoms with at-home remedies isn’t typically sufficient. Help is available with thyroid optimization, but you may wonder what’s in store for you during every step of the process. You may also question how the treatment even works. This can give you an idea:

01.

The Consultation

The Consultation

At the consultation, we’ll get to know everything about what you’re going through by asking you to tell us about your symptoms and their frequency and severity. We’ll dig for additional information by asking you specific questions. This part of the visit serves two purposes: one, to see if an underactive thyroid could be causing your symptoms; the other, to improve your quality of life and ease the symptoms you’re having, even if thyroid optimization isn’t the answer.

During this part of the consultation, we’ll also discuss your medical history, including whether anyone in your family has ever had a thyroid condition. We’ll want to know if you’ve ever been diagnosed with a thyroid problem, as well as the medications you are currently taking. Women will be asked about their pregnancy history.

You can expect to have your vitals taken, including your temperature, heart rate, and blood pressure. We’ll also check your body composition and assess for any neck swelling or tenderness.
The other portion of this appointment will consist of taking a blood sample to check your thyroid hormone levels, including your thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), free triiodothyronine (T3), free thyroxine (T4), and reverse T3.

02.

Receiving Treatment

Receiving Treatment

Once the results of your blood test come back and our physician has reviewed them, we’ll determine if your thyroid isn’t working as it should. Our doctor will then recommend a treatment plan tailored to your specific needs, addressing the symptoms you’re facing and helping you to live a happier, more productive life overall.

Lifestyle choices are a major component of treatment plans here because they can support your thyroid function and ease the strain certain habits can have on this gland. For instance, having a high level of poorly managed stress can hinder hormone production and conversion. How you eat also plays a role, as some minerals, such as iron and zinc, are essential for hormone production and conversion.

Other lifestyle changes may include:

  • Improving sleep
  • Exercising regularly
  • Avoiding toxins

Supplement recommendations are often a part of the treatment. Sometimes, taking a medicated approach to balancing hormone levels is necessary, though.

03.

Follow-Up Appointments

Follow-Up Appointments

After you begin thyroid optimization, you may need to return if the treatment plan isn’t reducing your symptoms; however, we can sometimes make adjustments over the phone.

To continue taking medications, you’ll need to visit once a year to have your prescription renewed. We’ll take bloodwork at these appointments and can adjust the treatment as needed if you continue to experience symptoms.

How Treatment Works

The goal of treatment isn’t just to manage your symptoms; it’s about getting to the source of the problem, the fact that your thyroid isn’t doing what it should be. Regardless of your specific treatment plan, it all works together to increase the amount of the hormone your thyroid produces. By increasing levels, more thyroid hormone is produced and flows through the bloodstream.

Beyond what treatment does for your thyroid, optimization may also aid in the conversion process, which occurs outside the gland. In some cases, your T4 might be normal, but the conversion process is what’s causing your symptoms of hypothyroidism.

Your thyroid gland primarily produces T4 and releases it into your bloodstream, where it is distributed to your tissues and organs. Once received, the tissues convert it to T3, the hormone that impacts your energy, metabolism, and more.

Qualifying for Thyroid Optimization

Thyroid optimization isn’t for every client who comes in with symptoms. Only some qualify for the treatment, particularly those with low thyroid function. That said, there are still ways we can help you overcome your symptoms, which may include lifestyle changes and supplement recommendations, or recommending an alternative treatment.

Generally, though, these indicators can give you an idea if this treatment could benefit you: (As a note: you may not have all of these.)

Are Feeling Fatigued or Have Low Energy Often

You might feel tired frequently, both mentally and physically. On a regular basis, you could also feel like you have no energy to do anything. Keep in mind that this can also be a sign of another hormonal imbalance, but we can test for that as well, particularly if you’re in the age bracket when your sex hormone levels may be decreasing.

Are Experiencing Concentration or Memory Problems or Brain Fog

If you’re experiencing brain fog, memory issues, or concentration problems, the issue could be your thyroid. The T3 hormone helps the neurons in the brain produce energy. The hormones can affect neurotransmitters in the brain, including dopamine and serotonin. It can also slow circulation and decrease the amount of oxygen that reaches the brain. However, thyroid optimization may help you feel mentally alert and focused; if not, we can recommend alternative treatments.

Are Noticing Thinning Hair or Brittle Nails

Less oxygen may reach the hair follicles, and they may not receive the energy they need to continue dividing. When your thyroid isn’t functioning optimally, more follicles may end up in the resting phase, causing the hair to grow thinner and slower. Since thyroid hormones stimulate keratin (a protein essential for nail and hair growth), treating a sluggish thyroid can help in some cases.

Have Unexplained Weight Gain

The thyroid gland produces hormones that have a major influence on your metabolism. Without adequate hormone levels, your metabolism won’t run efficiently, causing you to gain weight.

Besides weight gain, you might notice it’s becoming increasingly more difficult to lose weight. Other factors can affect your weight as well, but we, fortunately, offer a variety of treatments to assist.

Are Having Other Symptoms

You might have other symptoms, too, such as a slowed heart rate, mood changes, or muscle weakness or cramps. Thyroid optimization can also help with these.

As a special note: there are no medical conditions that’ll stand in the way of treatment. Anyone can try to improve their thyroid function due to our physician being able to customize the treatment and stay away from taking a medicated approach.

When you can expect results depends on the severity of your thyroid deficiency and the treatment approach given to you. Overall, some clients experience a difference in as little as a week or two. At this point, they might feel more energized and be in better spirits. The mental fog may start to clear, while the fatigue may ease up some.

Energy and mental clarity tend to improve even further by weeks four to six. It’s common to notice a significant improvement in your hair, nails, and skin around the two-month mark. By three to six months, you start feeling the full benefits, including better metabolism and consistently improved energy levels.

You’ll also want to decrease the amount of stress you have and stick to an exercise regimen where you’re working out at least three to five times per week. If you need further assistance, reach out to a practitioner who can assist with thyroid optimization.
